Small-scale gold mining equipment refers to machinery sized and configured for low-to-medium throughput operations — typically 5 to 50 tonnes per hour — where capital cost, transportability, and simplicity of operation matter more than maximum capacity. The equipment set is organised around two deposit types. Placer and alluvial deposits are processed by screening and gravity separation, using a gold trommel screen, sluice box, and centrifugal concentrator. Hard rock deposits require comminution first: a jaw crusher reduces run-of-mine ore, a ball mill grinds it to liberation size, and a vibrating screen classifies the product before gravity recovery.
In both cases the equipment is not a collection of independent machines but a circuit. Feed preparation determines what the recovery units actually see, and recovery units determine whether fine gold reports to concentrate or to tailings. This is why equipment selection should begin with the deposit and the gold particle size distribution, not with a machine specification sheet.
The placer circuit follows a simple sequence. Raw gravel is fed to a trommel screen, which washes and separates material by size, discharging oversize rocks and passing the undersize slurry forward. The screened slurry flows across a sluice box, where riffles and recovery matting create low-velocity zones that trap dense gold particles while lighter sand and gravel pass over. The sluice concentrate is then upgraded, and the sluice tailings can be routed to a centrifugal concentrator, which applies enhanced gravitational force to capture fine gold that gravity alone would not retain.
The hard rock circuit inserts comminution upstream. Run-of-mine ore is crushed in a jaw crusher, then ground in a ball mill to a size at which gold is liberated from the gangue. A vibrating screen classifies the mill discharge, returning oversize for further grinding. Liberated gold is then recovered by gravity separation — centrifugal concentrator, shaking table, or sluice — with the concentrator typically doing roughing and the shaking table doing cleaning.
The Gold Process Equipment hub maps this flow stage by stage, and it is worth reviewing before specifying individual machines.
A correctly matched circuit delivers four practical benefits. First, recovery is predictable: when screening, feeding, and concentration are sized to each other, gold losses concentrate in identifiable streams rather than disappearing across the plant. Second, operating cost stays controllable, because oversized equipment wastes energy and undersized equipment forces operators to run beyond design capacity. Third, maintenance becomes scheduled rather than reactive, since wear parts are consumed at a known rate. Fourth, the circuit remains expandable — a small placer line built around a trommel and sluice can accept a concentrator later without redesign.
The alternative — buying machines individually on price — reliably produces bottlenecks. A concentrator rated well above the trommel's throughput simply idles; a crusher undersized for the mill forces the whole plant to run at the crusher's pace.
Placer and alluvial mining. Loose gold-bearing gravel and sand. The circuit is screening plus gravity: trommel, sluice, concentrator. Water supply is the binding constraint, and mobility often matters. A Small Gold Wash Plant packages these stages into one transportable unit, while Compact Alluvial Gold Equipment suits sites with limited footprint or frequent relocation.
Hard rock mining. Gold locked in surrounding rock. Requires crushing and grinding to liberation size before gravity recovery. A Jaw Crusher handles primary reduction and a Ball Mill performs grinding; both stages are covered under the Crushing and Grinding process hubs.
Tailings reprocessing. Previously processed material where fine gold was lost. Screening and centrifugal concentration can recover value from suitable tailings, though locked or extremely fine gold may need additional methods.
Gold-bearing feed is abrasive, and screen media choice affects both recovery and uptime.
| Media Type | Wear Life | Open Area | Blinding Risk | Best Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Polyurethane panel | High | Moderate | Low | Wet screening, abrasive placer gravel |
| Rubber panel | High | Moderate | Medium | Coarse dry screening, impact-heavy feed |
| Woven wire mesh | Low–Moderate | High | Medium–High | Fine dry screening, clean feed |
| Self-cleaning mesh | Moderate | Moderate | Low | Sticky or near-size material |
For wet placer screening, polyurethane panels generally outperform wire mesh on wear life and resist blinding better. For dry, coarse, high-impact feed, rubber is often more economical. The detailed trade-offs are set out in the Polyurethane Screen vs Rubber Screen vs Wire Mesh comparison, and media options sit under Polyurethane & Rubber Screen Panels.
| Equipment | Function | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trommel screen | Size separation and washing | Handles sticky clay, high capacity per unit area | Does not recover gold itself |
| Sluice box | Coarse gold capture | Low cost, simple, high capacity | Poor fine gold recovery, needs stable water |
| Centrifugal concentrator | Fine gold recovery | Recovers fine liberated gold | Requires prepared feed and correct operating parameters |
| Shaking table | Concentrate cleaning | High grade final concentrate | Low capacity, sensitive to feed variation |
These units are complementary rather than competing. A sluice handles volume and coarse gold cheaply; a Gold Sluice Box is the standard first-stage unit, while a Vibrating Sluice Box suits clay-bearing or manually-cleaned operations. A Centrifugal Gold Concentrator then targets the fine fraction, and a Shaking Tables - Gold Process unit cleans the result.
| Deposit / Feed Type | Screening | Primary Recovery | Fine Gold Stage | Typical Constraint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coarse placer gravel | Trommel | Sluice box | Optional concentrator | Water supply |
| Fine alluvial sand | Trommel + vibrating screen | Sluice box | Centrifugal concentrator | Slimes handling |
| Clay-bearing placer | Trommel with washing | Vibrating sluice | Centrifugal concentrator | Clay disaggregation |
| Hard rock ore | Vibrating screen | Gravity after grinding | Centrifugal concentrator | Liberation size |
